As humanity fast-tracks its progress day in and day out, identifying different aspects of life that can be improved to contribute to the bigger picture of optimal living, there is one element that is often overlooked in the favour of its more renowned cousins, regular exercise and a well-balanced diet.

The element in question is, of course, the simple pleasure of quality sleep. Why is this overlooked? The most common reasons are a lack of plan to sleep for an adequate amount of time, consuming food at hours later than recommended and failing to minimise the screen time on the numerous devices that we regularly use.

Alas, why is a good night’s sleep so important in the context of optimal living? For numerous reasons which affect more aspects of your life than you probably realise.

  1. Heightened productivity and focus

If you are wondering why you are not able to get work done on certain days, lack of sleep may be a major contributor since it has shown that sufficient rest can really ensure that your workday goes strong.

2.  Bodyweight control

Adults and children with poor sleeping habits were found to be more vulnerable to gaining weight with the number as much as 55% in adults. It may not be a factor as strong as some other but it has an indirect impact in the long run.

3.  Poor immune system

A lack of quality sleep has shown to impair the body’s ability to recover, repair, and rejuvenate itself for another day. This is important in the current context since someone who sleeps for less than 7 hours a day has been found to be thrice as prone to the common cold versus someone who sleeps at least 8 hours a day.

There are a lot of other effects owing to poor sleep such as being prone to heart disease, depression, lower social and emotional intelligence, among others. There is no one standard recommendation in terms of how many hours a person needs to sleep since it depends on your age and habits but 7+ hours has proven to be effective. Standardise your sleep cycles and back it up with your diet and exercise. Only when these elements work in tandem is when you can be well on your route to an optimal life or even a regular hassle-free healthy living.
